Liverpool's Littlewoods Transformation: Film Studio Dreams Unveiled (2026)

Transforming a Liverpool Landmark: A £70 Million Film Studio in the Works!

The iconic former Littlewoods building in Liverpool is on track for a major transformation! Plans are being finalized to convert this well-known location into a state-of-the-art television and film production studio, a project estimated to cost a whopping £70 million. But what does this mean for the city, and what hurdles lie ahead?

The journey began in December 2023, with the initial steps toward this ambitious project. While remediation work has been underway, and planning permission for construction was granted in October 2024, the project still requires significant funding to become a reality. This is where the story gets interesting.

Liverpool City Council Leader Liam Robinson has announced that discussions with government ministers will take place in February to secure crucial backing. "We're working on some of the detailed plans around it, and we've been invited to Downing Street to present to the government," he stated. This indicates a high level of national interest in the project, which is great news for Liverpool.

But here's where it gets controversial... Developer Capital & Centric (C&C) has warned that the current economic climate has increased the project's cost, potentially exceeding the value of the completed development. Co-founder Tim Heatley has been in talks with ministers to explore 'gap funding' options, which is a critical piece of the puzzle.

Adding to the excitement, Liverpool-born television producer Jimmy Mulville is part of a team working with Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram and industry experts to include an education hub at the site. This addition could provide invaluable training and opportunities for aspiring filmmakers in the region.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has already committed up to £17 million to the project, demonstrating a strong commitment to its success. They are working collaboratively with the government, the city council, and C&C to secure the necessary funding.

What do you think? Will this film studio be a game-changer for Liverpool, or are there potential challenges that need to be addressed? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
