Israel's bold move to tackle traffic congestion: A multi-billion shekel highway plan.
In a country where traffic jams have become a daily struggle, Israel is taking decisive action. Netivei Israel, the state-owned highway authority, has unveiled an ambitious plan with a price tag of up to 9 billion shekels ($2.4 billion). This initiative aims to transform some of the country's most congested corridors and provide a much-needed boost to public transportation.
But here's where it gets controversial: the plan involves a significant investment in road infrastructure, which some argue may not be the long-term solution. Despite this, officials are confident that the scale of the investment and the accelerated tender process will make a noticeable difference.
One of the key projects targets Highway 44, a notorious bottleneck between Beit Dagan and Ramla. With average morning speeds as low as 25 kph, this section is a prime example of the traffic woes faced by many commuters. The proposed upgrade includes a complete overhaul, adding interchanges, widening lanes, and even introducing dedicated public transportation lanes. The goal? To create a safer, smoother flow of traffic and provide an efficient public transport option.
And this is the part most people miss: the plan also addresses congestion on urban and intercity roads. For instance, a project on Highway 4 aims to create a continuous network of public transportation lanes, connecting northern Sharon to central Israel. By replacing the Raanana Central junction with an interchange, officials hope to reduce congestion and improve the reliability of public transport.
Other projects in the works include a bypass around Kfar Yona and upgrades to Route 57, all part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle congestion in the Sharon region. Additionally, Highway 40 will see improvements, with a high-occupancy vehicle lane and upgrades to southern sections.
Government officials acknowledge that these initiatives are not an overnight fix. However, they emphasize the importance of a multi-faceted approach, combining road improvements with investments in mass transit systems and enhanced public transportation services.
Moshe Ben Zaken, Director-General of the Transportation Ministry, highlights the need for a shift towards public transportation. "It's not sustainable to keep expanding roads indefinitely. To truly ease congestion in high-demand areas, we must offer a real alternative to private vehicles."
If all goes according to plan, some of Israel's most congested corridors could undergo a remarkable transformation within a few years.
