iOS 26.2 introduces a new AirDrop feature called 'AirDrop codes', offering a convenient way to share files and photos with contacts outside your contacts list. Here's how it works:
AirDrop has been a popular iPhone feature for sharing content with friends and family. iOS 26.2 enhances this with 'AirDrop codes', providing an additional layer of security when sharing with unknown contacts.
When you enable AirDrop on your iPhone, you'll see three options: 'Receiving Off', 'Contacts Only', and 'Everyone for 10 Minutes'. iOS 26.2 adds a fourth option through AirDrop codes.
If you want to share content with someone not in your contacts, you can exchange a one-time code. After the sender enters the code, both you and the receiver will be visible to each other in the AirDrop options for 30 days.
You can manage these AirDrop codes in the Settings app under 'General' and 'AirDrop'. Apple explains that you'll automatically appear in the AirDrop list for 30 days for those you've shared a one-time code with.
The utility of AirDrop codes lies in their simplicity and speed. While 'Everyone for 10 Minutes' offers less security, and 'Contacts Only' can be cumbersome, AirDrop codes provide a quick and easy way to share content with anyone, without the need to add them to your contacts.
