Gabe Landeskog, a seasoned NHL player with over 700 games under his belt, is on a mission to repay Team Sweden's unwavering faith in him after their Olympic gold pursuit. Despite facing numerous setbacks, including four knee surgeries and missing three full NHL seasons, Landeskog's determination has led him to the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
His journey to this point has been a testament to resilience. Just as he was finding his rhythm, scoring points in seven of his last ten NHL games, a rib injury sidelined him for the Avalanche's final 14 games before the Olympic break. Yet, here he stands, captaining Sweden into a quarterfinal clash with the Americans.
Landeskog's impact on the ice is undeniable. His second goal of the tournament in a 5-1 win over Latvia secured a 2-0 lead for Sweden just over halfway through the first period. Despite having a silver medal from the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Landeskog's focus remains on the ultimate prize.
"I've got a silver medal at home, but it doesn't compare to the gold medal I aspire for," he said. "We all want to win, and we want to compete against the best. I'll reflect on this journey later, but for now, I'm soaking in every moment and giving my best."
Landeskog's leadership and on-ice performance have been integral to his international success. Since the 2011 World Junior Championships, where a high ankle sprain limited him to one game, he has been a pillar of strength for Team Sweden. Named alternate captain at 18, his leadership has been as significant as his playing abilities.
Team Sweden's decision to stitch the 'C' onto his jersey for the Olympics is a testament to his impact. Head coach Sam Hallam praised Landeskog's journey, stating that it inspired his teammates. While Victor Hedman, a strong candidate for captain, was also considered, Hallam acknowledged the respect Hedman has for Landeskog.
