Cycling Drama: When a Punch in Roubaix Almost Led to a Fight in Calpe (2026)

In the world of cycling, intense moments can arise from the most unexpected encounters. Take, for instance, the story of Daan Hoole and Yevgeniy Fedorov, whose brief but intense encounter at the 2024 Paris-Roubaix almost escalated into a full-blown brawl during a training ride in Calpe, Spain. But here's where it gets controversial...

During the 2024 Paris-Roubaix, where Hoole was racing in support of Mads Pedersen, he found himself in a heated moment with Fedorov. The two were fighting for position in the peloton when, in a corner, Fedorov became increasingly angry and punched Hoole hard in the ribs. This moment, thankfully, was not captured by the TV cameras, but it left a lasting impression on Hoole.

"After that corner, he just got really angry, and he hit me hard in the ribs. Just a punch. It wasn’t on camera, otherwise I think he would’ve been taken out of the race," Hoole recalled in the Live Slow Ride Fast podcast. Despite the anger, nothing came of it at the time, as Hoole was focused on completing the race.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the two riders met again during a training ride in Calpe, Spain, just weeks after the race. Fedorov, who was at a cafe with teammates, saw Hoole riding by and the dispute was reignited.

"I saw him, and I got really angry. I was like, you want to fight, right? Let’s fight, come," Hoole recounted. Perhaps the situation didn't escalate due to a language barrier, with Hoole suggesting that Fedorov had a teammate translate his words. Nonetheless, the two riders managed to resolve the issue without any major confrontation.

Hoole's story is a testament to the fact that even in the most intense moments, there is always a chance for resolution. "After that, in [the Tour of] Guangxi, Alexey Lutsenko came up to me and said, 'hey you’re friends', and since then, he’s my mate," Hoole joked. The two riders have indeed settled their differences, with Hoole noting that "Now, when I say ‘left’ in the bunch, he lets me through."

While the story may have ended without any major incident, it serves as a reminder that even in the world of professional cycling, emotions can run high and unexpected encounters can arise. It's a testament to the human element in the sport, and a reminder that even in the heat of the moment, there is always a chance for resolution.
