60 Years of Friendship: Returning to Outback Hometown for Retirement (2026)

Imagine a friendship so strong, it survives six decades and a cross-country move, all thanks to a teenage promise! Veronica McDonald and Wendy Windridge, two lifelong friends, are living proof that some bonds are unbreakable. They've recently returned to their outback hometown of Hughenden, Queensland, fulfilling a pact they made as teenagers. Let's dive into their incredible story.

These two women, now in their late 60s, share a connection forged in the halls of St Francis Catholic Primary School back in the 1960s. Veronica remembers those days fondly, filled with simple joys: "School prayers, church, and playing in the afternoon until dark."

Their friendship, as Wendy puts it, was a classic case of opposites attracting. "She was sort of really square; I was really wild, we met in the middle." Veronica adds with a smile, "Wendy was this rebellious young student in my class and that's something I loved about her … and I still love about her."

But here's where it gets interesting: Hughenden in the 60s wasn't the sleepy town it is today. With a population just over 1,000, the streets once buzzed with dances and social gatherings. "We used to rock the floor of the old hall…the old wooden floor would actually rock," Wendy recalls. Their favorite pastime? Riding on the bonnets of cars down the main street! "There was always a party and always a car to ride," Veronica remembers.

Both women eventually became nurses at the local hospital before moving away to start families. Veronica built a successful nursing career across the country, while Wendy dedicated herself to childcare and even fostered 35 children! They stayed connected through phone calls and visits, until life brought them back together. Wendy's mother's illness prompted Veronica to return to Hughenden to help with care.

"The bond that forms from somebody doing that for you — it lasts forever," Wendy reflects.

After her mother's passing, their support for each other continued. "If one was feeling that they needed support because of something in their life was happening, then the first person we would ring would be each other," Wendy says.

And this is the part most people miss: After more than 40 years apart, they've returned to Hughenden to retire, honoring their teenage pact. "Subconsciously, we were working towards it but had forgotten about it because we were so young and so much happens in between," Wendy explains. Veronica now volunteers with the QCWA and at the local Vinnies shop, while Wendy focuses on finishing her mother's craft projects.

Veronica sums it up perfectly: "It's always been my perpetual home." Wendy believes the key to maintaining such a long-lasting friendship is simple: "Just always remember to pick up the phone and keep that contact."
